We publish books that matter. It’s quite natural to believe that our favourite things matter the most in this world. In that spirit, I contend that the geospatial industry (hardware, software & data) are pivotal to both planning and management of many parts of our lives. I won’t belabour the point about how much of our information is based on geography, we all know it’s true – from electoral boundaries to big box store placement and the roads in your neighbourhood – location affects our lives continually.
Geo matters! Open Source Geo really matters!
That’s why organisations like OSGeo are so important. For the past five years OSGeo members have helped to collaboratively highlight the value and importance of open source geo apps and data. Likewise, powerful events like FOSS4G help to bring those members and new users together to experience even more of the possibilities for collaboration.
But how can the technically minded meaningfully interact with geodata and apps that affect their lives if those apps are locked up or hidden in a black box? Sure there are workarounds and concessions you can make, but in the end you keep the tools that matter most to you close to your chest (or snugly up your sleeve).
It is with this in mind that Locate Press has been born. Building on the success of OSGeo’s projects and influence, we are setting our sights on books, ebooks and other training material to support trainers, consultants and users with high quality material. Several books already exist on these topics but we want to make even more of them available to help spread the word about these projects even further.
At the same time we aim to increase the incentive for projects, developers and users to get more books in print by offering royalties on sales. The end result will be royalties back to projects or to authors who help get material together and work with us to make an even bigger impact.
We won’t be happy until this critical area of our beloved industry is saturated with material for bringing newcomers, students, developers and other users into the open source geo fold.
Contact us! Share your thoughts and ideas for books that are needed to make this leap. They don’t have to be brand new, they can even be boring old user manuals that are in high demand. We’ll work with you to get it in tip-top shape and pushed out through our innovative publishing channels.
Keep in touch. We’ll be unveiling our first two titles shortly (think QGIS)!
